This was my second time to Zoetry Paraiso de La Bonita, in Puerto Morales, about 20 minutes car ride south of Cancun. This property is where you go if you just want to relax, have some quiet time, and eat well and drink very well. First I need to give a shout out to Daniel, who manages their activities and teaches the Aqua Aerobics, Yoga, Sound Healing, and Tai Chi classes. He was simply an incredible instructor and each of his classes exceeded the expectations of my lady and I. We attended every single one we could as a result. El es muy simpatico. His water aerobic classes each day in the main pool had you both exhausted at times, really getting your heart rate up, combined with breaks of stretching and relaxation to slow your heart beat back down. First up- if you want a party hotel with dancing, and loud music- THIS IS NOT IT. This is a hotel to get away, meditate, relax, sit by the beautiful pool with a nice book, and enjoy the food and weather. The rooms are beautiful and spacious, the property is lovely and quiet (no worries of loud music played by the pools), and the alcohol is one of the few properties that say top shelf and actually mean it. The food is solid, but there are only three restaurants so the variety is lower than at the larger resorts. The do have theme nights most nights, where the menu changes. One night it was a fun and flavorful Mexican Buffet, and the next night was Italian night with Opera singers. The dinner entertainment with local musicians playing guitars and singing was great, and really makes this place stand out. I particularly like the Cello and Harp music that is played on the patio during breakfast as you dine overlooking the ocean. What a great way to start your day. I will say that my one criticism is that the chefs play it too safe with the food. The spice level is more akin to England than Mexico. I found myself wishing everything was much more picante. Overall the spice level was bland compared to what I would expect to find in Mexico. The flavors were lovely and the food was excellently prepared, it was just mild and delicate and fell far too much on the "let's not scare off the northerners with our powerful spices and flavors" band. Each day I had to ask for salsa rojas and other things with which to add a little heat and tang to spice up my dishes. (And they provided a trio of lovely flavored house-made salsas). So my one critique to the chefs are, add some ranges of picante to your dishes so those of us that love the spicy heat, get true Mexican depth of flavors while in Mexico! But overall, the food itself was top notch and really well prepared. The Short Rib at La Canoa was tremendous, and easily one of the best things we ate all week. Likewise, the grilled food at the beach grill (El Chiringuito) was lovely as well. Really great tacos and the spinach salad with avocado and sesame fried chicken in a light teriyaki sauce was a got-to for lunch each day. The service at this resort is TOP NOTCH, and every single employee goes out of their way to greet you with a smile and provide great service. I recommend going in the months of December through March as the temperatures are more mild and it's sunny most days. It was sunny and 80 degrees by day, and a lovely 68-70 at night. We left the AC off at night and slept with the bedroom doors open to the balcony so we got the breeze and slept to the lovely sound of the waves crashing just a few hundred feet away. Sooooo restful! If you go in the summer it will be much hotter during the day and at night, and you might miss that ability to sleep with the sound of the ocean surf lulling you to sleep. Also the Summer can be the rainy season. The Thallasso Spa is lovely, and I highly recommend the hyrdotherapy circuit each day, where you start in the Sauna, then move to the steam room, then to the cold water plunge pool for a few seconds, and then finally into the hot tub to warm back up. You end at the Salt water pool outside if you wish. It's a little cold during this time of year (70-72 deg. water?), and not heated unlike the main pool which is a lovely ~82 degrees. Not quiet bath water, but warm and lovely, yet still refreshing. They do offer a timeshare pitch-- but it's not pushed on you, and is merely offered early in your stay, "if you'd like to learn about it." it does offer you a great deal if you sit through the 1 hr. 45 min. presentation ($400 in resort credit and a certificate to return for 3 nights stay). Totally worth the 1:45 we spent learning about it. The beach is going to have seaweed-- it is what it is these days in this part of the world. Sadly the sargassum seaweed forms a blanket from Mexico through the Caribbean to the west coast of Africa, and each year it gets worse with the run-off of the nutrients into the ocean from the increased farming around the world's coastal regions. They do their best to rake it and clean the sandy beach-- but the ocean water is not going to be enjoyable to swim in along the coast of 90% of the time as a result. It's not the fault of the resort. It's the fault of industry's effect on poor mother nature. I love this property and will be back- especially if Daniel is still in charge of the entertainment and classes!
