I selected this property as it was supposed to have been freshly renovated, has a great location, and many great reviews. Upon walking in the smell of the hotel is most striking. Not in a good way as if you had walked into a Four Seasons or Peninsula property where the signature scent adds to the brand experience. This hotel’s scent is so stale and overpowering that it feels like it is being used to cover up something unpleasant. I have stayed at the St. Regis in NYC so I don’t think this is a St. Regis issue, but rather a St. Regis in Venice issue. The issue carries into the guest rooms as well. It seems petty, but in Italy at five star properties you expect the suits of the staff to be well tailored as they were throughout Rome and Florence. That is not the case here, and you are very much reminded that you are at a Marriott. While the guest rooms have fresh carpeting and furniture, the property feels like it had only a facelift rather than an interior overhaul which is what I was looking for. The hallways leading to the guest rooms are especially bad. We found the last guests empty water bottles in our refrigerator. Leading up to our trip the concierge never reached out to ask if we needed assistance with arrangements so I reached out directly through their website. Unfortunately, in order to reach the concierge you have to fill out a website form instead of being given a direct email, so I completed the form asking for assistance. My requests apparently went into a black hole. I expressed these frustrations upon arrival and they did arrange for a lovely tour guide for us for an afternoon. While they told us her fee they failed to tell us that we were to pay her in cash direct ahead of time. This would have been nice information to have. Lastly, when referring to me when speaking with my husband they repeatedly referred to me as calling “the lady” or “that lady” instead of Mrs. XX. It felt disrespectful. In full transparency, I am a high maintenance traveler. This is why we tend to stay at Four Seasons, Mandarin Orientals, Six Senses, and properties of similar caliber. If we were to do this again, we would have selected the Aman Hotel which is actually very central for an Aman (they are usually further away). They are also building a Four Seasons in Venice which will be another welcomed option.
I recently stayed here Nov 19-23 with my parents and so happy I did! The rooms were perfect, clean and gorgeous (and got one room upgraded for free!). Both rooms had amazing views of the Grand Canal. The staff were so kind and helpful, everyone from check in to concierge to cleaning and restaurant workers! Went to Gio’s every morning for breakfast which was our favorite! Even went back a couple days for drinks and again for dessert. Even upon leaving the hotel at 4am for an early flight they put out coffee and biscuits for us in the lobby. Perfection!
The St Regis is in an incredible location that enables very easy exploring of Venice as well as the opportunity to sit in the cocktail bar or restaurant looking over the canal. The staff are amazingly friendly and unfaltering in how helpful they were.
