The weather was lovely. The resort was clean. But this is NOT a 5 star. It is a 3.5 star. I have been to many many all inclusives and this one was frustrating on so many levels. Tips were expected/demanded for everything…. Get a drink… tip, see your maid… tip, try to book a restaurant reservation (don’t even get me started on the line ups at 7 am to book)…tip, go to a restaurant…tip… and tip equally or they make a fuss about tipping one more than another and make you feel bad, want your room fridge topped up… tip… your safe isn’t working… tip… coffee in the morning.. tip. I ran out of small US dollar bills as the tipping was so expected/demanded/asked for and when I tried to get more change from the gift store, reception … I was told no change. If a resort is going to expect such excessive tipping… they should facilitate us getting change especially since the one ATM on site didn’t work. It was exhausting. The restaurants were average… a hot meal at the a la carts was rare… always a long wait and Luke warm meal when it arrived. The Blue Moon restaurant was the worst..2.5 hour wait to get our tepid average tasting meal. Huge line ups in the morning at Mike’s coffee place and you would think they would have self serve coffee and tea available but they don’t… why? Because after waiting an hour for a coffee, they want a tip. I don’t begrudge tipping… but it was so pushy and demanding at this resort that it became very tiring always worrying about a tip… they even looked at me for one when I was at the swim up bar… I don’t have a waterproof pouch with money on me! If you needed something from guest services, they never answered the phone. You had to walk up to the main lobby to speak with someone (and then tip them). The snack shack by the pool was horrible food if there was anything available. Very little selection and poorly made. Water sports unfortunately were unavailable due to the rough surf.. apparently El Faro is in one of the roughest surf areas.. not the fault of the hotel but a reality. Would I return… no. Three years ago we stayed in Punta Cana at Grand Bahia Principe and much more enjoyable resort to visit.
