My family and I stayed here in late February and were impressed with the rooms, friendly staff and amazing views. I would like to give a big shoutout to our Aqua Aerobics instructor Kevin who was amazing! This was my first time trying water aerobics and he made it so fun. The strength training and kickboxing classes were challenging and fun! Thanks Kevin for making our stay fun and exercise conscious!
We went for a weeks vacation in February and while the weather didn't co-operate 100% we still had a great time. This is our 16th stay in Jamaica since our Honeymoon 37 years ago. I believe Jewel Grande was our best overall experience so far. It was a short 15 minute ride from the airport to a speedy check-in. We had a room in Tower C which is the best location for restaurants, spa/gym, and entertainment. Our room was nicely furnished with a great balcony overlooking the pool and ocean. We had a 2nd floor room so it got quite noisy from 1-4 in the afternoon from all the pool activities. Nightly entertainment was also loud but that was short in endurance also - from 8-915. We found all the restaurants to be good. We are early diners so we would go at 6 when they were open and never needed to wait for a seat. We are wine snobs and found the house wines to be good (Spanish wines). Premium wines could be purchased, and I thought the wines were priced a little high but still in an acceptable range. The only restaurant that we needed a reservation was the Asian. Book that the day you arrive if you want to get a seat. We liked our room and only had one issue that was fixed promptly (running toilet). Hot water was sporadic and if you took a shower after 10pm, you might get all cold water. We asked for extra pillows and got them. Really our only complaint about the room was it seemed we were always the last to be cleaned. Maybe that is the result of the maids doing other floors first but we would see maids on our floor all day but they would do everyone else first. Not a big deal - we survived(LOL). The pools were clean but freezing. We did manage to go in everyday, thanks to the courage that my Pina colada provided. The bartenders were all friendly characters and very outgoing. They had a nice selection of drinks. Both pool hot tubs were out of service all week. Disappointing since the pools were so cold. We used the gym everyday. Not very big but the machines were good and plenty of free weights. They need to increase the size about 3 times. There were 3 treadmills, 2 steppers, and a bike, all in working order. Again, they need more room because those machines fill up fast and are not always available. My wife liked her spa day and massage. Entertainment was nightly outside. Entertainment is very subjective. We really liked the steel drum band, sax player,, and World culture dancers. The other nights shows were okay. Not impressed with the Michael Jackson show. Just some general thoughts. While it was 82 degrees everyday, it was also very cloudy and windy. We were only able to open the pool umbrellas twice as the winds were over 20 mph. Same for the water sports. We could only use them until about 10 am when the wind picked up. The reason we picked February was we figured only a few families with toddlers would be on vacation. Boy were we wrong. There were families of all ages. Probably 1/3 of vacationers were there. The kids were all well behaved though and because the water was so cold, very few kids were in the pool. I'm not a fuddy dutty who doesn't like kids but I just wasn't expecting so many on this vacation. They really tie up the bartenders with their going to get a drink every half hour. Again, I'll live. It was just great to be on vacation. Finally, I want to comment on staff. For the most part, everyone was friendly, helpful, and very gracious.I would like to mention the ones we got names for but really, I could have listed so many more. Our waiters Uwayne, Dwayne,Kim, Jermazin Jermaine, and Shantoya. Bartenders Karrol, and Kavol. Housekeeper Angela. Landikaye massage. Kevin at the gym and pool aerobics(they really should give him a raise). Solomon piano. Wilford and all the other breakfast servers at Orchids. The Check-in ladies and guys. And finally all the security personnel who always held doors and greeted you when you went past. Really, the reason we keep going back to Jamaica is the people are so great. The second reason would be the Jerk Chicken. Make sure to get some everyday! We would definitely stay here again - probably not in February though.
First of all, shout-outs to the staff for being so friendly and taking great care of our family, which wasn't simple with a 4 yr and an 8 week old. Individually, Concierge Dannielle, Kenno (Arrival & Departure,) Annetta & Carolyn (Orchids breskfast,) Samantha & Sabrina (Pierside,) Taseki (Moonstone,) Obrian (Waves,) and Andre at the gift shop were all amazing and went above & beyond. Highlights: - check in / check out was a breeze and the bellhops were helpful - 10-15 mins from airport - C Bldg (Sentry) is the heart of the property and much newer/updated. The elevators alone make it better than A & B. Oceanfront views are amazing. - French toast and made to order eggs/omelettes were a daily treat - Coffee & ice cream shop provided an endless supply of caffeine to keep me going - Chicken at the Jerk Chicken Hut is a must everytime it's open & grilling - Scotch Bonnet wings at Pelican Grill - Pork chop at Moonstone - Filet at Waves - Buttered noodles and fries are an option at every restaurant we went to for kiddos - Teppanyaki (hibachi) was excellent and massive portions of steak, chicken, salmon, rice, & veggies - Kids club & drop off service. Amazing staff and structured arts & crafts in an extremely safe environment - Endless bottled water to mix formula Lowpoints: (though not necessarily for all) - Steps and endless staircases. You will get a workout but luckily for a large resort it's actually very compact - Don't waste your time with a stroller unless you strictly want to use it in the airports - Areas of beach/water are rocky. Sea wall keeps waves to minimum which is a plus for some and minus for others - Majority of beach chairs are broken in the middle and present an safety/pinch hazard. Could use improvement: - Bldg C glass balcony barriers and balcony doors need thorough cleaning and maintained. I scrubbed ours with wet towels and drastically improved our view. (Noted, we did spend a lot of time in the suite)
