September 2022
The Erato Hotel is a small, family-run and very lovingly managed hotel in Crete very close to Heraklion. We felt at home here from the first second - all the staff in the hotel were absolutely friendly and accommodating and always in a good mood. They were truly an absolute highlight of the hotel! The hotel was very clean (with daily cleaning of the room) and the food (even for me as a vegetarian) was tasty. A very special highlight was the Greek evening with authentic Greek music, dancing and good food. The atmosphere there was also terrific! We spent a day at the small hotel pool, but were also on the beach a few times, which is about 10-15 minutes walk from the hotel. You can rent tours and a rental car (which is highly recommended in Crete to see as much as possible) of course in one of the many tourist agencies, but we found it very convenient that at our request someone came to the hotel and brought us a car. So we didn't have to worry about anything and could drive off immediately. Besides us, there were many couples, but also young people and families at the hotel. For snacks in between, there is a bakery and a small supermarket no more than 100 meters away. In addition, a bus leaves almost directly in front of the hotel, which takes you to Heraklion in one direction, and to Malia and beautiful beaches in the other for about 1,90€ per person. I can recommend the hotel with the best knowledge and conscience and thank the staff very much for our amazing time here!

August 2022
We have stayed in the hotel at the end of August 2022 for 10 days. Before I get to the food: location is kind of boring, we did not mind that though as we rented a car. As the vacation was very expensive, our expectations were not low. We had a room with 1 double and 1 extra bed and the room was very cramped - for 2 adults and 1 child quite uncomfortable as there was just a narrow alley between the beds and wall+table. Otherwise the room was an okay average. The pool inside the hotel was very pleasant. Additionally, there is a table tennis available. The staff is indeed friendly and nice. Now the food. From other reviews we expected boring breakfasts and great dinners. We were half-board. We are not an extra demanding eaters, but we like good food and we can distinguish between bad and good quality food & ingredients. We appretiated pretty good dakos option for breakfast and amazing, tasty oranges for dinners as well as high quality shark meat a few times for dinner. But otherwise the food was awful! They do not use good quality ingredients and they do not really cook well. The breakfast cheese and ham/salami options were very, very low quality. The “mozzarella” had absolutely nothing in common with mozarella. Desserts at the dinners were often a joke (some kind of tasteless cream - not mascarpone at all - with cocoa above and broken biscuit below called tiramisu, or plain pudding with a few nut pieces on it called panna cotta). All kinds of pasta tasted seriously awful (we are not Italians). Both bf and dinners offer many options, which we especially appretiated during the dinners (many salads and meals to choose from), however the quantity simply does not make up for the poor quality. Btw, salads were more or less decent. An advice for the hotel: buy better quality ingredients (and better quality fruit except oranges) and change the cook. Go and taste the food in almost any taverna around and look for the differences. Perfect a few meals, offer them for dinners, make the dinner selection smaller but with the good meals and people will be much more satisfied.

August 2022
This was our second time at Crete, we stayed for 7 days, hotel has family atmosphere, is cozy, has small pool with ca. 8-10 sunbeds, english/german/french spoken by hotel stuff. Do not mistaken this hotel for resort, you should consider it only as entrypoint for your latter trips (we went to Chersonissos by bus, twice to Heraklion by bus, one day we rented a car thru hotel services and went to Rethymno, then to village Spili and around). Hotel is ca. 20minutes from sea where you can find some sandy beaches and get sunbed with umbrella just for a drink (no need to buy fancy drinks, beer/coffee is enough), but I advice to go for better beaches Crete has to offer. Room services on daily basis, everything as it should be. Food was delicious and tastefull - there is always a choice for everyone. Staff is bee-level hardworking you often see tiredeness in their eyes but they would do anything to please you. They also organise Cretan night - traditional party with live traditional music and grilled food every week so if it is your first time at Crete, you might find it interesting.
