This resort has great potential - and could totally be a 5 star resort if some changes were made. The location, styling, and set up is beautiful. The 2 bed/2bath villas were perfect for our needs and the actual rooms get 5-stars in my book. Pros: - cozy beach, lovely pools, swim up bar - infinity edge hot tub overlooking ocean - Prickly Pear island - when it was open - Front desk staff and butlers. Special shout outs to Chantelle and Craig for the extra help. - Food was pretty good Cons: - 2 of 3 restaurants were closed. There was nothing notated on the website. Food options were pool bar, or the one restaurant - both with limited menus. - Prickly Pear was really cute, but nothing was consistent with the time it was open/closed for the day. - There was a fitness retreat group there and the resort catered to them over guests. Our friend got kicked out of the gym mid-workout bc the retreat group wanted to use it. - One of our villas did not have hot water for 3 out of the 4 nights. After many many phone calls, the manager did compensate us for our hardship after the 4th night - which we certainly appreciate - No kids/teen club staffed/open even though the website stated otherwise - pools not heated & were chilly - Lots of rust - especially on large retaining wall by the ocean. This is really an eye sore and needs to be addressed. - Some of the restaurant and pool bar staff were downright surly. This was a drastic difference to the front desk and butler staff who were wonderful.
Ok, so I have stayed in Hodges Bay in 2019. When they were just building and paid $320 for ocean front room for 3 people. We had 1 bedroom suite. Cons: Very pleasant staff. Beautiful rooms with modern furniture. Cleanliness – 8 out of 10. Beautiful pool area. Yoga area. Nice breakfast area. Beach service 10 out of 10. Soft lounge chairs, and quite a few private areas. Very nice bar with changing lights at night, and live music. Beach is very nice. Sunsets are beautiful there. You can safely swim at night; water is soft and calm. Almost no waves. Cons: Limited staff service in room. Limited choice for breakfast – hotel had lox only 2 days out of 5 days we stayed. Even though breakfast is free, it is not really. Your choice of coffee varies of the charge. Restaurant of “fusion” at the hotel really mixes up some unmixable ingredients and serve as a meal. I ordered a salad for over $16 plus gratuity of 18% at least, and taxes… and I got drops of different dressings on sides of the plate, a couple of pieces of crab meat, thinly cut reddish, and something else, I could not figure it out. None of this made sense to me. The soup was very different from what we used to in NY and NJ as for the fusion… Very limited choice of food. We ordered taxy every day for dinner to different places to eat after day 1. If you forgot your toothbrush, you would need to get a taxy to go to a store at another hotel to be able to buy it. I would give them higher star, but I think that travelers, who pay such high prices for flights and work so hard to vacation, especially with children, deserve to pay fair price for the stay, food, and service. Hodges bay does not show for $1100 per night for ocean front room during high season. Stay elsewhere. I understand that management at the hotel may think different, and they invested a lot in this property, but for Antigua, they need to lower the prices for travelers, who have plenty other choices of great stay there.
From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, Hodges Bay and it’s staff transported us to a magical world. The food, drinks, staff, and everything in between were next level. Words cannot describe how incredible this place is. The resort is beautiful and the people were so welcoming and accommodating. It really was paradise. We will most definitely be returning on future trips.
