We stayed at the Colony Club for 9 nights in November. This was our first stay there. We read the reviews before booking but found it hard to cost out the holiday so this review includes a realistic view of the money that it costs for the meals etc. PROS Best beach on the west coast. They brought us canapes and fruit on the beach. There is a free water station on the beach. There is a self-service coffee/tea station all day near reception area. There is tea/coffee/milk jiggers/tea pot and coffee maker in the room. Free bottle of rum punch in the room. Some homemade chocolate fudge in the room. Stocked mini bar, which we had to unload to get our items into the fridge. There is happy hour from 4-6pm but this does not include wine. Wine is full price. The beach is safe and very good for swimming. No reef though for snorkelling. The evening food was lovely and a good size portion. We ordered a main course in the evenings but they also gave us a raspberry sorbet before that which tasted lovely. CONS If you are able to cram in a lot of food for the money then you may like the buffet night. But for us it was poor and overpriced. Our recommendation is to eat out on this night – Tuesdays at present. It costs 142.86 BBD each. Plus 10% service charge, plus another 10% VAT, plus another 2.5% direct tourism services. So our bill was 285.72 for the buffet plus 72 for a bottle of wine. Add on the three taxes and the bill came to 438.20 BBD which was 219.10 USD. The three taxes are put on anything that you order to eat or drink. No price list for the mini bar. Hence we did not use anything from the mini bar. We bought our own champagne from duty free. DRINKS PRICES – Banks Beer 11.56 BBD, Glass of pinot grigio 28.44 BBD, Margarita 27 BBD, Singapore sling 28.44 BBD. Main course in the evening approximately 70 – 100 BBD. A reasonable bottle of wine for 70 BBD. SUNBEDS First morning we were up early as still on UK time. We took our coffee down to the beach to watch the sunrise. It was about 5 a.m. We had only been there a few minutes when we noticed a couple of guests come onto the beach and take a little table and put it under a brolly. The brollies remain in position overnight on the beach. The sunbeds are chained up in a bundle until the beach attendants unchain them and start putting them under the brollies about 7 a.m. So that’s what you have to do if you want a particular position on the beach i.e. front row. Come down at 6 a.m. latest, put a little table under the brolly, put your brolly up, wait for the beach guy to unchain the beds and bring you two of them. The first day, we started packing up at midday to leave the beach, and I had hardly started packing up our belongings when a woman came running over and said “please can we have your sunbeds?”. She was desperate to move from the back row to the front row. There was nearly a stampede to grab our beds. The beach is good as you can get shade nearly all day. There are plenty of trees all the way along. It is a fantastic beach. One of the best we’ve been to on the west coast. ROOM We did not hear a single noise at night time. The doors of the rooms do not bang when shut. Bed was very comfy. You will sleep well. Choice of TV channels good. Monkey outside the bedroom door some mornings! He also sat on a sunbed next to us on the beach, then grabbed someone’s banana and scaled the tree with it. Then, plop, came down the empty banana skin. RESTAURANT It opens 7pm. We were able to make a block booking for the week for 7pm. Some nights it was quiet as a lot of people go out to eat. Breakfast was very good, hot plates and food. Coffee tasted nice. Not like the normal cheap rubbish you get at other resorts. ROOM SERVICE We only have the maid in once a week so not a big deal for us. TIP Take a photo of all your bills and tot it up before checking out. Ours was spot on. But a couple in front of us had problems.
This was our 4th and last time to stay at The Colony Club. The previous three visits were consistently good in terms of service and attitude. This time the service was not up to a standard to be expected from a Hotel at this price. It would appear they have not trained their staff and provide non existent supervision. Dinner service. Tables we sometimes not fully laid. We arrived had menu presented. Would you like water yes please Tap water. 10 minutes later arrives notices there are no glasses on the table. 10 minutes later glasses arrive, no water. Another 10 minutes. Walks away even though we would like to order. In the end got up and went somewhere else. Breakfast Again incomplete table items. Why is nobody having any pancakes. because there is no Maple syrup. After a few days some appears however nowhere near the pancakes. Waitress goes to collect my plate and place three plates with left over food from another table on my plate in front of me. Availability of peppermint tea was inconsistent. Tye used to have Smoked salmon no longer. Happy Hour! In the past sit down after 4pm there would be a list of cocktails on the table and cocktail of the day. Waiter would come for order. Bring cocktails and some crisps. When finished would you like another one. Well as its half price why not. Now go and sit down no List. wait 20 mins and go to the bar with 15mins. No crisps offered. This is not a happy hour. In the end buy a bottle of gin and have a drink in the room. Hotel is closing out on business. Managers Reception. In the past you met the manager and waiters would circulate with drinks and canapés. This time No sign of manager, queue for drink and then all canapés have gone. Gym One treadmill out of action. Pedal on bike faulty (mentioned in previous review). TV missing. There use to be floor mat and exercise ball. Reported these items and no one seemed interested at all. No notes made. Room OK looking a little tired. Two days did not get masde up until 5.30pm and then 6.30 turned down. Beach service was very patchy Overall they have lost the plot. need some experienced managers in to train staff and supervise. Many returning guests made it clear they were very disappointed and will not be returning. Great shame with some effort could have been good.
We first visited The Colony Club last November. Whilst there were a couple of minor issues at the time we still really enjoyed our stay and loved the location of the hotel. You can walk to Holetown, either along the beach or the main road, in about 15-20 minutes. We came with two other couples, one had been to the hotel many times, and the other was their first visit on our recommendation. We received an email from Virgin Holidays, about a week before the holiday, to say that the pool was closed for maintenance. Knowing the hotel we realised that was a big deal as it is the focal point. Our friends, who travelled with BA, did not get any notice about this at all. During our last visit we had a Garden Room, this time we had a Swim Up Room, which was better located with a great seating area out front with steps into a small pool area. One of our friends had a downstairs Sea View. Our room was bigger. On a couple of days we went out for late lunches and couldn’t get hot water from the shower, far from ideal. One of the net blinds was hanging loose, surely an easy fix, but it stayed that way for the remainder of our stay. We saw numerous outside areas that needed work. As stated on other reviews the pool was not worked on during our stay and I suspect it will be closed for months to come. The waiting staff at the hotel are, mainly, excellent. We used the Sunset Happy Hour bar most nights. On a couple of nights they were lacking in waiting staff which resulted in annoyingly long waits for drinks. I’d heard they had a happy hour at 10 pm as well. When we ordered a drink after 10 and asked why it wasn’t Happy Hour prices the waiter had to ask management who, finally, explained that the evening Happy Hour was at the inside bar only. The next evening I had to point this out when I signed for drinks. The waiter at this bar didn’t realise it was Happy Hour and, on my insistence, asked a senior. He then had to change my bill. It seems strange that staff are not aware when and where Happy Hours are. We asked reception a number of questions but the ‘system’ was often down So had to return. There was a fantastic day out on the Island Bus tour, which was included in our stay, as was the Turtle Boat Tour, another good trip. We also went out on the included 30 min small catamaran trips a couple of times, which are very relaxing. Our friends tried Kayaking Stand up boarding as well. Another annoyance was the internet often dropped, particularly in outside areas. I’d have given this 3.5 stars if I was able. Hopefully Marriott will spend some money to bring the building back to where it should be. I would like a third visit as it has so much potential.
